Son père et sa mère sont des artisans laqueurs. Sa grand-mère maternelle est hmong, une ethnie qui vit dans les montagnes du nord du pays, à la frontière chinoise.Dung vit à Huê, au centre du Vietnam. Huê fut autrefois une cité impériale et, aujourd’hui encore, elle est la capitale culturelle du pays. Grâce à son père, qui est professeur de français au collège, Dung connaît la langue de Molière et veut découvrir la France.Nghiep habite Hô Chi Minh-Ville (ex-Saigon), où ses parents ont un petit commerce. Pendant ses vacances, il va dans le delta du Mékong, chez son grand-père, qui cultive le riz. Comme la majorité des familles vietnamiennes, Nghiep et ses parents pratiquent le culte des ancêtres.
